We just finished our first month of Teen Vocal Performance Workshops on Thursday nights at 7 and I don’t mind saying – “so far, so great!”
We saw a ton of growth through the process of drilling a song down. In a two hour session, each participant is likely to get up five or six times to work through a song. I do keep the lecturing to a bare minimum because, well, teens would rather get up and do the work over and over and over again instead of listening to someone else talk about it. Understandable.
Participants are also encouraged to speak up and offer their own experience in watching a performer. This feedback is essential to both parties and the class as a whole. Nobody argues or justifies or gets mad at the feedback either because we all understand that the goal is simply to be present and creative. It’s a big challenge. Young performers nowadays end up being taught so many bad practices that all the joy is taken away from singing. They end up robotically faking their way through everything instead of having a simple conversation with their audience.
So, we slash through the shtick. Get to the heart of the matter. And do it again. And again.
If you’d like to join us, let me know. The class has a waitlist, but I will be opening another night soon.
